EXPLORE: Whistler

Happy December! Jack Frost is nipping away across Canada, and we couldn't be happier because colder weather means winter sports! Whistler got a lot of buzz for the last Olympics, and it's still a top spot in Canada for a winter wonderland getaway. Aside from hitting the world-class slopes and eating piping-hot BeaverTails pastries there are some other great activities that you won't want to miss.

Take an incredible 4.4-kilometer gondola ride that zips you from Whistler mountain across to Blackcomb. One for the record books, it boasts the longest unsupported span (3.024 kms), the highest lifts of its kind (436 metres) and is the longest continuous lift system in the world.

Surrounded by a spruce and cedar forest this outdoor spa is the epitome of relaxation. Relax in hot pools, eucalyptus steam rooms and Finnish saunas, then refresh yourself in crisp waterfalls, showers and baths. All the while breathing in the fresh country air. Top it off with a massage and you're likely to float all the way home.

Exercise your mind and learn about the two different BC First Nations cultures whose traditional land overlaps in Whistler. See incredible handiwork including woven goods and totem poles, and pick up some Native art in the gift shop.

UPDATE: BeaverTails Make The News!

We're proud to report that we were able to create some pro-beaver buzz last week! DEBATE: Beavers vs Bears

The debate is on! Senator Nicole C. Eaton is proposing that our beloved beaver be replaced by the polar bear as the official emblem of Canada. You can guess which side we're on... To bolster support for our favourite furry symbol, here are our top five reasons why beavers are better than polar bears:
1. They've paid their dues! The trade of beaver pelts played a huge part in the settlement and history of Canada.
2. Beavers are the strong silent type. They're stoic, smart and will stand up for themselves. Did you see those teeth?
3. Unlike some animals that are known to hibernate, beavers are hardworking all year long.
4. Beavers are community builders and help forestation. They were eco-friendly before it was trendy!
5. When it comes to tail-shaped pastries, it's a no-brainer! Bigger is better!

Rest assured, we at BeaverTails are sharpening our teeth on a project that will show the noble beaver just how much we care…and demonstrate its majesty to all who behold it. Stay tuned!

INSPIRE – Our 5 Fave Links of October

October is among our favourite months, thanks in part to Canadian Thanksgiving and Halloween. There's also something special about it being part of the season where the air cools and the leaves change colours... As you'll see from our five favourite links this month, we've fallen for fall!

  1. Food blog extraordinaire, Tiger In A Jar, released its latest mouth-watering video that has spiced pumpkin mini-cakes growing on trees. Doesn't get much better than that!
  2. The NHL has kicked off its regular season and there's already been plenty of action. Our bets are in the pool, are yours?
  3. We're on the move! BeaverTails will soon be setting up shop in majestic Niagara Falls. Check out our travel guide to get to know our new neighbourhood.
  4. Satisfy your appetite and get into the Halloween spirit with this adorably spooky Tentacle Pot Pie.
  5. Hockey isn't the only sport we love. Baseball also gets us going! We were glued to the television for the World Series and the festive victory parade in St. Louis.

EXPLORE: Fall for Niagara Falls

The majestic vista of Niagara Falls has been a favourite destination for honeymooning couples and families for ages! We’ll be opening a store at 4967 Clifton Hill on November 4th (with a Grand Opening on November 12th), and are thrilled to be part of one of Canada’s great tourist attractions. Of course, the biggest draw here is the falls itself, a gargantuan cascade system that draws over 28-million visitors a year to its plunging waters. Here are some of our favourite ways to enjoy the falls (on the Canadian side, of course!):

Queen Victoria Park is a green space whose manicured gardens can be enjoyed by picnicking families. The park also has platforms with spectacular views of the falls.

Named after a mythical character of First Nations origins, the Maid of the Mist is a historical boat that docks on both sides of the border and takes passengers behind the misty veil of the falls for an up-close-and-personal view.

Both the Skylon Tower and the Minolta Tower offer breathtaking aerial views of the falls.

The Whirlpool Aero Car is a cable car built in 1913 that still takes tourists over a section of the falls known as the Niagara Whirlpool.

Get ready for your trip by watching out some movies starring the falls, like Niagara with Marilyn Monroe and Superman II

Of course, nothing beats the awesome experience of seeing the falls in person—and indulging in a tasty BeaverTail while you’re there will only make the visit sweeter!

WATCH: Films with Canadian Actresses

Fans of Lost who are still in withdrawal will be thrilled to see Canadian star Evangeline Lilly in Real Steel, which just hit the big screens. It’s a robot-fighting flick that’s fun for the whole family, and also stars Aussie heartthrob Hugh Jackman.

For those with a hankering for other tough-as-nails Canadian heroines in action-packed flicks, the following might make for a good movie-night-in:

Whip It
Haligonian Ellen Page plays a newbie in the hardscrabble world of Roller Derby, where she learns to elbow aside the competition and make friends with Drew Barrymore in the process.

Sherlock Holmes
The beautiful Rachel McAdams (originally from London, Ontario) plays the love interest of Robert Downey, Jr. in director Guy Richie’s take on the Edwardian detective stories.

Splice
Toronto’s Sarah Polley (once a child star on Road to Avonlea) is all grown up in this sci-fi thriller about a genetic experiment gone wrong, which was one of 2010’s big sleepers.
